Caring for Wooden Furniture: Oiling, Lacquering and Minor Repairs

Solid wood furniture can last generations — but only with proper care. This guide explains what to do regularly and how to handle repairs when they arise.

Regular care: cleaning and oiling

Clean furniture with a soft, slightly damp cloth — avoid aggressive cleaners and excess water. Refresh oiled surfaces with specialist wood oil once a year — or sooner if the wood looks dull and feels rough. Apply oil with a cloth, allow it to absorb, then wipe away any excess.

Lacquered versus oiled surface

A lacquered surface is more resistant to water and grease — but when scratched, the whole area needs sanding and re-lacquering. An oiled surface can be repaired locally — just sand the damaged spot and re-oil. For heavily used pieces (tables, worktops) we recommend hard wax oil or oil-lacquer hybrid finishes.

Minor repairs: scratches and dents

For shallow scratches apply matching furniture wax or paste. Deeper scratches: sand with the grain (grit 120 then 180) and re-oil or re-lacquer. Dents can often be removed with a damp cloth and an iron — the wood takes up moisture and the fibres recover.

Prevention: light, humidity and heat

Solid wood furniture dislikes direct sunlight — UV rays degrade the surface. Keep it at least 20–30 cm from radiators — excess heat causes cracking. Ideal indoor humidity is 40–60 %. Coasters under pots and vases protect work surfaces.
