Wooden Balcony: Wood Selection, Surface Treatment and Annual Maintenance
A wooden balcony is beautiful — but outdoor conditions are harsh. The right wood choice and consistent care determine whether your balcony lasts 5 or 30 years.

Which wood is suitable for outdoor use?
For exterior balconies we recommend naturally durable species: larch, Douglas fir, Siberian cedar or robinia (black locust). These contain natural resins and tannins that resist moisture and decay. Soft conifers (spruce, pine) are cheaper but degrade quickly without regular treatment.
Surface treatment: impregnation, wood stain or oil?
Impregnation protects the wood from within — it's a mandatory base layer. Wood stain adds colour and UV protection — we recommend oil or alkyd stains without film-forming agents, which let the wood breathe. Hard film lacquer on exterior wood is not recommended — it cracks under wood movement and causes rot underneath.
Annual maintenance step by step
Every spring: rinse the surface with water, let it dry, check the condition of the finish. If the surface is dull and the wood has turned grey — lightly sand (grit 120–150) and apply a fresh coat of stain or oil. Direct summer sun and winter frost are the biggest enemies — a good coating is the cheapest prevention.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Most common mistake: coating damp wood — causes peeling. Second mistake: no capillary gaps between boards (water can't drain away). Third mistake: applying a new coat without sanding the old one first.
