Solid Wood Kitchen Units: What to Look For When Choosing
A solid wood kitchen can last for decades — if the material, wood species and finish are chosen correctly. This guide helps you ask the right questions before you order.

Solid wood or veneered board?
Solid wood is cut directly from the trunk — natural grain, high density and can be sanded down and refinished. Veneered MDF offers a similar look at a lower price. Cheap laminate boards are practical but swell in humidity and are difficult to repair.
Wood species — oak, beech or walnut?
Oak is the most popular choice — hard, moisture-resistant and easy to maintain. Beech is more affordable but more sensitive to humidity. Walnut looks luxurious with dark, fine grain. For rustic styles, pine or spruce work well but require more maintenance.
Surface finish: lacquer, oil or wax paste?
Lacquer creates a hard protective layer — water and grease resistant, but harder to repair when scratched. Oil penetrates the wood and preserves a natural look — easy to renew, but needs reapplication every 1–2 years. Wax paste is suitable for lower-traffic surfaces.
Construction details that matter
Solid wood moves with temperature and humidity changes. Properly designed units must have expansion gaps. Cabinet doors should use frame-and-panel construction. Ignoring these details leads to cracking or warping.
What to clarify before ordering
Ask the maker: which wood species, which finish, how are expansion gaps handled, what is the warranty and what does it cover. A reputable maker will answer clearly and without hesitation.
